Since the opening of Busan Port in South Korea, the annual throughput of containers will exceed 15 million TEUs for the first time. As a result, Busan Port will become the fifth port in the world with an annual container throughput of over 15 million. The first four ports are Hong Kong (2000), Singapore (2001), Shanghai (2005) and Shenzhen (2005).
Busan Port, which opened in 1876, began to deal with container business in 1978. It broke through 1 million TEUs for the first time in 1984, 5 million TEUs in 1998 and 10 million TEUs in 2003.
Busan Port has 368 freighters from 66 shipping companies sailing to more than 500 ports around the world every week. Thanks to the expansion of the proportion of global shipping companies and the sharp increase of transshipment volume caused by bad weather in some Chinese ports, the container throughput of Busan Port has increased rapidly recently.
